Our first CD

Artifact Music ART-23 is PHH!K, a disc of Live Electronic Music performed by Peter Hannan and Henry Kucharzyk on a battery of instruments both digital and analog, including the classic Theremin and the new Lightning, a performance interface built by Don Buchla.

Since first performing together in 1982 Hannan and Kucharzyk have independently made major contributions to new music in Canada as composers and performers. An ongoing element of their work has been on the cutting edge of sampling, signal processing and live performance techniques of MIDI instruments without the aid of computers or sequencers.
Hannan and Kucharzyk have created a unique repertoire that explores the possibilities of musical creation at the intersection of the acoustic and the electronic, the digital and the analog. They construct sound worlds in real time that engage the ear and the imagination .

The CD’s 13 tracks recreate the non-stop live feel of a phh!k performance. Included are : "dexter sinister" , Henry Kucharzyk's unique duet for Theremin and Lightning; 2 tracks for artificial singers (“hiro” and “weather”) by Peter Hannan; and 6 “intersections” which trace the trajectory of music to noise.
In between they take the listener on : “ a sonic journey along a screaming freeway with stops at a ‘70s style disco, an african festival, a middle eastern bazaar, and a bump and grind palace. .” from the Georgia Straight
