phh!k songs:

ARTIFACT MUSIC announces a new two-disc set – containing both an audio CD a quadraphonic DVD (5.1 and DTS) by live electronic music duo Peter Hannan and Henry Kucharzyk, a.k.a. phh!k. (Confused about the name? ph = Peter Hannan, hk = Henry Kucharzyk.) These songs were developed over the past year, and feature the amazing voice of Christine Duncan ( “A musical daredevil and a unique talent” according to a Toronto Globe and Mail headline before phh!k songs premiere in Toronto last year) and drums/percussion of Rick Sacks. The result is an astonishing and accessible take on experimental electronic music that will appeal to trip-hop, IDM, post-rock and jazz fans, as well as the new music crowd. Antique synth fans will also flip over the duo’s collection of gear, including theremins and processors by the legendary Bob Moog, and Lightning by Don Buchla.

ph and hk each approached post-modern songwriting in different ways on this album. Hannan created texts from a limited word list- the 100 most common words in English combined with a list of 27 words that form the basis of a possible proto-world language, combined with modern scientific words and concepts. Kucharzyk’s texts are adapted from the works of Marshall McLuhan.

“Hannan and Kucharzyk are modern-day wizards”
Georgia Straight, Vancouver

“Duncan...is a unique talent in Canadian music. No other singer has spanned as many types of musi, from gospel and jazz to Tuvan style throat singing and unbridled coloratura....Her live performances tend to be encyclopedic encounters with every kind of singing that has ever caught her fancy.”

Globe and Mail, Toronto
